Aird Project – Ceiling Drop and Interior Finishing

Description of the mandate
In this condo located in Montreal , our mandate was to create a gypsum ceiling drop to conceal a ventilation duct installed during the installation of a wall-mounted air conditioner , while ensuring harmonious integration with the existing finishes.
The work included constructing the 2x3 frame and furring strips , installing drywall, taping joints, installing a discreet access hatch , and completing the necessary painting work to ensure the new drop-off blends naturally with the existing ceiling and walls.
We also carried out some silicone touch-ups in the bathroom , completing the final finishing details of the project.
Technical challenges
Despite its relatively modest scope, this project presented several technical challenges.
Integration of a ceiling drop around the mechanics
The goal was to completely camouflage the ventilation duct , while maintaining a clean finish that was proportionate to the room.
The landing area was therefore constructed in such a way as to:
to remain perfectly level , regardless of slight irregularities in the existing ceiling.
to provide a solid structure for the installation of gypsum.
to visually integrate with the architecture of the condo.
In order to allow the installation of the drop, it was also necessary to slightly modify the path of an existing ventilation duct , while respecting the technical constraints of the building.
A finish that blends in with what already exists
One of the main objectives was to ensure that the new work would be as unnoticeable as possible once completed.
To achieve this, we have, in particular:
achieved a neat finish on the plaster joints.
installed a discreet access hatch integrated into the drop.
localized paint touch-ups were carried out on the walls and ceiling to perfectly harmonize the new surfaces with the existing finishes.
The result effectively conceals the mechanism while maintaining a uniform and clean appearance.
Solutions implemented
Structure of the fallout
Construction of a 2x3 structure and furring strips .
Installation of the necessary nailing bases .
Preparation and installation of a discreet access hatch .
Gypsum installation and plastering work
Installation of gypsum over the entire drop.
Installation of metal corners .
Complete plaster joint finishing.
Applying a coat of primer to inspect and correct imperfections before finishing.
Finishing work
Correction of finishing defects.
Complete painting of the fallout .
Touch-ups of paint on the walls and ceiling to ensure an invisible transition with the existing surfaces.
Silicone touch-ups in the bathroom.
Project duration
Less than 3 days.
Final result
This intervention made it possible to completely camouflage the visible mechanics while providing a simple, clean and durable finish.
Thanks to a custom-made structure, careful joint finishing and perfectly integrated paint touch-ups, the new ceiling drop blends naturally with the rest of the condo and becomes virtually imperceptible.
