Description of the mandate

This Montreal project involved modifying a portion of the existing deck to enlarge the openings around two mature trees. The client wanted not only to adjust the structure to create more generous clearances, but also to achieve a cleaner, more durable finish that better complemented the existing landscaping.

The intervention required a partial adaptation of the deck structure, while preserving the intact sections and ensuring that the whole remained solid and visually harmonious.

Technical challenges

Several challenges had to be taken into account to successfully complete this project:

  • Modifying the existing structure by creating clean and stable crossbeams, without damaging the rest of the deck.

  • Very limited workspace , especially between the trees and inside the openings.

  • The presence of trees in motion , whose trunks moved slightly with the wind, required additional precision during measurement, cutting and installation.

  • Working around elements already in place , requiring great care to avoid damaging anything.

  • Composite finish requiring precise cuts , in order to obtain clean, neat openings consistent with the rest of the deck.

These combined constraints required a rigorous working method, designed to guarantee strength, durability and aesthetics.

Solutions implemented

To meet the client's request, we first modified the deck structure by adding crossbeams to create wider openings better suited to tree growth.

A treated wood structure was used to ensure the stability and longevity of the whole.

The finish was achieved using composite slats , installed with "invisible" type fixings for a clean and uniform result.

A different color was chosen to highlight the contours and emphasize the boundaries around the trees , while maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the existing deck.

The cutouts were precisely adjusted to create smooth, durable and visually consistent openings despite the natural movements of the trees.

Project duration

The work was completed in less than a week , including the modification of the structure and the new composite finish.

Final result

The end result offers a modernized deck, clean and perfectly integrated into the existing layout.

The new composite openings highlight the trees while ensuring durability and visual continuity with the rest of the terrace.

The precise finish and the chosen colours allow for better delimitation of the zones while enhancing the overall aesthetics of the outdoor space.

The client is fully satisfied with the result and the quality of the finish provided.
