Description of the mandate
In this project carried out in the Lachine area, our mandate consisted of carrying out the complete replacement of an old wooden fence which had become unstable and at the end of its useful life with a new black chain link fence with privacy slats .
The work included dismantling the old fence, removing the old anchors, setting and installing new posts in concrete, and installing a new fence and a 42-inch access gate .
The clients' objective was to replace an aging fence, improve backyard privacy, secure access to the property, and obtain a durable, low-maintenance installation.
Technical challenges
This project presented several technical challenges despite its relatively modest scope.
Significant presence of stones in the soil
One of the main challenges encountered concerned soil conditions.
From the very first shovelfuls of earth, we noticed the presence of a significant quantity of rocks and stones at the location planned for the new posts.
This situation made it impossible to use a motorized auger , whether petrol or hydraulic.
In order to maintain the exact location of the posts and respect the planned alignment, we carried out a completely manual excavation , supplemented by the use of an electric jackhammer to break up the largest rocky obstacles.
This method required more time and precision, but allowed the posts to be installed in the intended locations while ensuring a solid base for the new fence.
Installation near the foundation
One of the new posts was to be installed in the immediate vicinity of the foundation of the residence.
To avoid any direct contact between the concrete of the post and the concrete of the foundation , a flexible decoupling membrane was installed between the two structures.
This precaution helps to limit movement transfers and respects good installation practices when a fence element is installed near an existing structure.
Solutions implemented
Site preparation
• Complete dismantling of the old wooden fence
• Removal of old metal anchor piles
• Removal of materials and site cleanup
Foundations and structure
• Installation and alignment of the new posts
• Manual digging of post locations
• Breaking up rocky obstacles using a jackhammer
• Installation of a decoupling membrane near the foundation
• Pouring of concrete and installation of posts
• Verification of the levels and alignment of the entire structure
Fence installation
• Installation of a 6-foot-high black chain-link fence
• Installation of privacy slats
• Installation of a 42-inch gate
• Adjustment of hardware and locking mechanism
• Final check of operation and alignment
Project duration
Less than a week.
Final result
This new black chain-link fence with privacy slats is a great replacement for the old wooden fence which had reached the end of its useful life.
Despite the significant constraints related to soil conditions and the presence of numerous stones, the posts were able to be installed in the planned locations to ensure optimal alignment of the entire structure.
The end result offers more privacy, improves the exterior appearance of the property and provides clients with a robust solution requiring very little maintenance for years to come.
