Description of the mandate

This project brings together two distinct interventions carried out in Montreal, each with the objective of restoring important exterior elements: the front door of an apartment and the rear balcony of another property.

In both cases, the clients wished to revive the overall appearance of their building by restoring existing elements rather than replacing them, while preserving their original character.

Technical challenges

Both interventions presented their own challenges:

For the front door:

  • Handling an old, heavy and delicate door , requiring special care.

  • Uniform wood color despite heavily worn areas.

  • Complete restoration without dismantling the moldings or details of the door.

  • Permanent protection of the glass and wood against rain during the work.

For the rear balcony:

  • Very dry wood, worn out by the years.

  • Direct exposure to sunlight and weathering makes sandblasting and dyeing more demanding.

  • Need to restore a clean and uniform appearance without structural intervention , while maximizing the durability of the wood.

Solutions implemented

Restoration of the front door

A complete sanding was carried out to expose the bare wood before its texture was evened out and minor irregularities corrected using hand tools.

All the original moldings and details have been kept directly in place in order to preserve the architectural character.

The door was then given a protective varnish to enhance its natural color and ensure good weather resistance.

The address numbers have been repainted and the hardware thoroughly cleaned, for a stylish and durable finish.

Restoration of the rear balcony

After a thorough cleaning, the balcony was completely sandblasted to remove the old, dull, and peeling finish.

The railing was restored, then the entire balcony was given a stain suitable for outdoor conditions, revitalizing the wood while protecting it from the elements.

This intervention has restored a clean and welcoming appearance to this frequently used space.

Project duration

Each intervention was completed in less than a week , including preparation, work and finishing.

Final result

The front door has regained all its charm thanks to a meticulous restoration that highlights the wood grain and original details.

The rear balcony, now clean and uniformly stained, has regained an aesthetic and welcoming appearance, perfectly suited for everyday use.

In both cases, the work significantly improves the overall appearance of the building while preserving existing elements.
